Featured artists, new venues and more.....

Dave Liebman will be the featured headline show Saturday Aug. 10 at The Sugar Loaf Performing Arts Center.

The Sugar Loaf Performing Arts Center is home base for the festival and the jazz camp / education program.

David Liebman’s career has spanned over four decades, beginning in the early ‘70s with his "apprenticeship" period performing and recording in the groups of drummer Elvin Jones ("Live At The Lighthouse") and Miles Davis ("On The Corner"). Since then he has lead his own groups (Lookout Farm; Quest; The Dave Liebman Group) featuring musicians such as John Scofield, Richie Beirach, Billy Hart, Adam Nussbaum, Al Foster, John Abercrombie and Vic Juris. Lieb has consistently placed among the top three in the Downbeat Critics Poll for Soprano Saxophone since 1973; winning first place in both the Downbeat and Jazz Times Critic's Poll in 2011. As well in 2011, Liebman received the NEA Masters of Jazz Award, the highest honor for jazz given by the United States government.

And speaking of Abercrombie and Nussbaum, we're pleased to have John Abercrombie, Adam Nussbaum, Steve Swallow and Ohad Talmor at The Sugar Loaf Performing Arts Center, Sunday Aug. 11 at 6 PM.

Over a career spanning more than 40 years and nearly 50 albums, John Abercrombie has established himself as one the masters of jazz guitar. Favoring unusual sounds (he played electronic mandolin on McCoy Tyner's 1993 album 4x4) and nontraditional ensembles (recent quartet recordings have included violinist Mark Feldman), Abercrombie is a restless experimenter, working firmly in the jazz tradition while pushing the boundaries of meter and harmony."

Adam Nussbaum :

Nussbaum grew up in Norwalk, Connecticut and started to play drums at age 12 after studying piano for 5 years, also playing bass and saxophone as a teenager. He moved to New York City in 1975 to attend The Davis Center for Performing Arts at City College. While there he began working with Albert Dailey, Monty Waters, Joe Lee Wilson, Sheila Jordan and he played with Sonny Rollins in 1977 in Milwaukee. In 1978 he joined Dave Liebman's quintet and did his first European tour with John Scofield. During the early eighties he continued working with John Scofield in a celebrated trio with Steve Swallow. In 1983 he become a member of Gil Evans Orchestra and played with Stan Getz as well.

Steve Swallow is a jazz double bass and bass guitarist and composer noted for his numerous collaborations. One of the leading bassists in jazz, Swallow is noted for collaborations with Jimmy Giuffre, Gary Burton and Carla Bley.

Ohad Talmor is a Saxophonist, Composer and Arranger.

Now American, Ohad is originally from Israel but grew up in Switzerland and is long time Brooklyn NY resident.
He plays regularly with his own project; NEWSREEL – a flexible group mirroring his multi-faceted musical identity and which features some of New York’s most creative musicians: Dan Weiss, Jacob Sacks, Miles Okazaki, Shane Endsley and Matt Pavolka. Talmor’s other projects include the Steve Swallow Trio (featuring Adam Nussbaum) and Mass Transformation – a Nonet featuring Austria’s Spring String 4tet, singer Judith Berkson, Pete McCann, Shane Endsley, Mark Ferber focusing on the Music of Anton Bruckner.

Falcon Arts in Marlboro NY will participate in the 2013 Hudson Valley Jazz Festival. The Falcon has been on the forefront of live music in this region for years. Bucky Pizzarelli will perform Thursday Aug. 8th.

Jazz Education

This summer will mark the debut of the Hudson Valley Jazz Festival Workshop to be held at The Sugar Loaf Performing Arts Center , Aug. 8-10.

The workshop will be directed by veteran musician and music educator, Bob Rosen.

The model for this summer's workshop is a time-honored one that works..

"It works for both the Western European classical tradition and for the historically more recent American jazz tradition. Offer a curriculum of instrumental instruction coupled with performance ensemble rehearsal with an emphasis on jazz improvisation", says Rosen.

The workshop is open to aspiring improvising musicians of all ages and will have an outstanding faculty of instructors,
